Butternut Creek is part of the Chittenago Creek watershed. The stream's headwaters are found in Clark Hollow south of Rt 20. The Jamesville reservoir is formed by a dam south of the village of Jamesville. The stream runs north and meets Limestone Creek north of Minoa and runs into Chittenango creek south of Bridgeport.

These pictures show a flood tolerant tree located on the bank of Butternut Creek. The outside bank appears to have eroded away to the extent that the tree roots are completely submerged.
